Emeli Sandé Found Her True Love – Music In "Next To Me"

Posted by Kevin Z. Rong Thursday, January 19, 2012

The Scottish R&B singer Emeli Sandé continues to justify her buzz with a new promotional music video to her track "Next to Me," and giving fans a taste of every track from her forthcoming debut solo album "Our Version of Events," which hits shelves on February 13th. The golden voiced rising star's third single, "Next To Me," could, at first glance, be about a boy, or even be perhaps spiritual in its sentiment. In fact, according to her, was written about her true love – music.
As one of the masterminds behind Leona Lewis's "Glassheart," Sandé is one of the UK's fastest rising singer/songwriters. She admitted she was struggling to come to terms with her year so far. Her debut was written entirely by the 24-year-old herself, alongside her friend and producer Shahid 'Naughty Boy' Khan. Like many classic debut before it, Sandé's debut is a moment in musical time. Credible without attempting to be too cool, heartbroken yet crazy in love, the combo of heartfelt power ballads and mid tempo love songs gives the LP the cross over' appeal it needs to fare impressively in any of the markets it is released in.
The soulful Glaswegian songbird keeps it quite simple for the visual accompaniment to "Next To Me," which switches between shots of Sandé performing with her band and singing in front of a wall covered in newspaper clippings. The video is comprised mainly of her performing the song on a piano in an abandoned aircraft hanger with a drummer, spliced with straight to camera performance shots, but the simplicity of the visuals only amplifies the beauty of the single and Sandé's performance and this one could easily do as well.
Sandé is one of those artists who could sit on a bag of pampers while wearing a farmer's hat and the video would still be enjoyable because the music is just that good. This simplistic clip perfectly represented the raw appeal of Sandé as an artist who focuses on the material rather than relying on visuals and I found myself singing for its entire duration. This latest offering pertinently demonstrates that she's heading in the right direction.
