Joss Stone reminiscing over 'The love we had (Stays on my mind)'

Posted by Kevin Z. Rong Monday, September 2, 2013

British soul singer Joss Stone has released a new music video for the indie artist's emotional remake, "The Love We Had (Stays On My Mind)," the leading cover track from her sixth studio album, "The Soul Sessions Volume 2," the sequel to her decade-old 2003 debut and a powerful, heartfelt and classy comeback project saw her cover a number of soul classics released between the 60s and 80s. Phenomenal. Put simply, she's far too gifted and talented to have her cause forgotten even more than it already has.
The 26-year-old Grammy Award winner and British singer brings us new music wrapped in stunning vocal power and passion. Stone has certainly returned to her debut's soul covers format in more mature and superb voice, and has always been a tremendous shouter, but has acquired a vulnerability and ability to truly inhabit emotional song. Originally released in 1971 by US R&B group The Dells, “The Love We Had (Stays on My Mind),” is appropriately covered by the contemporary soulster.
Stone remodels the song by applying her spiritual, earthy soul voice to produce a startling and soulful makeover. Her version received praise from the band, whose lead singer Marvin Junior passed away last month. Ten years on from the original "Soul Sessions" album, which Stone recorded aged 15, there is undoubtedly a new level of maturity in evidence on this critically acclaimed new set - a stunning exercise in vocal poise, passion and power. You can almost feel the fire fueled behind her powerful vocals. The original is a terrific song but Stone's interpretation blows it out of the water.
Stone's emotional storm manifests into tangible torrential rains in her music video which finds Stone adding some modern twists to the 70s classic. Directed by Anit Bashar and Brian Nelson, the clip features Dover, UK born songstress at home alone in tears reminiscing over love lost and longing for the return of the object of her affection. "The video I think is perfect because of the water really. Second you hear I'm gonna be drenched in water you think... this is a white t-shirt contest, but that's not it, this is all surrounded by the drops going down the pain of glass... It's all about actual tear drops," says Stone.
